The crisp mountain air, the excitement of strapping into skis or a snowboard for the first time, and the thrill of gliding down a snowy run are experiences you'll never forget. But if you've never rented ski gear before, the process can feel a little intimidating. What size skis do you need? How do boots get fitted? What's included in a rental package? These are all questions we hear from first time visitors at XSports, and we're here to make sure the rental process is just as enjoyable as the skiing itself.
At XSports, we've been helping beginners get started on the mountain for over 40 years. Our team knows that your first rental experience sets the tone for your entire trip, which is why we take the time to walk you through everything and make sure you leave our shop feeling confident and excited. Whether you're a complete beginner or just new to renting gear, here's what you can expect when you come to us for your first ski or snowboard rental.
A little preparation goes a long way toward making your rental experience smooth and stress free. Before you visit our shop, there are a few things you can do to speed up the process and make sure we have everything ready for you.
First, consider booking your rental online in advance. When you reserve through our rental page, you can browse package options, select your dates, and provide your sizing information ahead of time. This lets our team prepare your gear before you arrive so you can spend less time in the shop and more time on the mountain. Plus, booking 48 hours in advance gets you a discount on your rental.
If you're not sure what size gear you need, don't worry. We'll figure that out together when you get here. But it helps to know your shoe size, height, and weight before you arrive. These measurements help us select the right skis or snowboard length and make sure your boots fit comfortably. If you're renting for kids, bring them along for the fitting since children's sizes can vary quite a bit.
Our rental packages are designed to give you everything you need to hit the slopes without having to piece together gear from multiple sources. A standard ski rental package includes skis, boots, and poles. A snowboard rental package includes the board and boots. We also offer helmet rentals as an add on because protecting your head is always a smart idea, especially when you're learning.
All of our rental gear is high quality equipment that's been expertly maintained and tuned by our technicians. We don't cut corners on the gear we put in our rental fleet because we know that good equipment makes learning easier and more enjoyable. When your skis are properly tuned and your boots fit correctly, you can focus on developing your skills instead of fighting with gear that's holding you back.
Our pricing is all in, which means the price you see is the price you pay. There are no hidden taxes or fees added at checkout, so you can budget accurately and avoid surprises. This is especially helpful for families who are renting multiple sets of gear and need to know exactly what they're spending.
When you arrive at our Fraser shop, one of our staff members will walk you through the fitting process step by step. This is where we make sure everything fits properly and is set up correctly for your ability level.
For boots, we'll have you try on a few different sizes to find the right fit. Ski and snowboard boots should feel snug but not painful. Your heel should stay in place when you flex forward, and your toes should lightly touch the front of the boot without being crammed. A properly fitted boot gives you better control and helps prevent blisters and discomfort throughout the day. Don't be shy about telling us if something doesn't feel right. We'd rather spend an extra few minutes getting the fit perfect than have you suffer through a day with boots that hurt.
For skis, we'll select a length based on your height, weight, and ability level. Beginners typically use shorter skis because they're easier to turn and control. As you progress, you can move up to longer skis that offer more stability at higher speeds. We'll also adjust your bindings to match your boot size and set the release tension based on your weight and skill level. This is an important safety feature that allows the ski to release from your boot during a fall to help prevent injuries.
Snowboard fitting follows a similar process. We'll match the board length to your height and weight, select boots that fit comfortably, and set up your bindings based on your stance preference and riding style. If you're not sure whether you're regular or goofy footed, we can help you figure that out too.
Once you're all geared up, here are a few tips to help make your first day on the mountain as enjoyable as possible.
Take a lesson. Seriously. Even if you're athletic and think you can figure it out on your own, a professional instructor will teach you proper technique from the start and help you avoid developing bad habits that are hard to break later. Winter Park Resort has excellent ski school programs for all ages and ability levels, and the investment in a lesson will pay off quickly.
Start on the bunny hill. There's no shame in spending your first few hours on the easiest terrain available. The bunny hill is where you'll learn to stop, turn, and con
