A More Promising Winter Pattern Is Developing
According to the NOAA Climate Prediction Center, El Niño is strengthening, with a greater than 90% chance that it will become “very strong” during fall and winter 2026-27. NOAA currently places the probability of a very strong El Niño between December and February at 70%.
A very strong El Niño does not automatically mean record-breaking snowfall in Winter Park. Weather is never quite that cooperative. But it does create a recognizable climate pattern, and Winter Park has a surprisingly encouraging history during similar winters.
OpenSnow reviewed seven significant El Niño seasons preceding 2023-24 and found that five of the seven produced above-normal March 31 snow-water equivalent near Winter Park.
During the most recent major El Niño winter in 2015-16, Winter Park Resort recorded approximately 360 inches of snow, or 103% of normal.
For anyone considering a Winter Park ski vacation following last season’s leaner snowfall, that history provides a welcome reason for optimism.
Colorado’s Precipitation Outlook Is Also Encouraging
NOAA’s current outlook shows much of Colorado leaning toward above-normal precipitation, while the state has roughly equal chances for above-, near- or below-normal temperatures.
That combination matters. More precipitation is always welcome, but skiers also want temperatures cold enough for that moisture to arrive as snow. At the elevations of Winter Park Resort, a wetter pattern without a strong warm-temperature signal creates the potential for a much more satisfying ski season.
It is still too early to predict individual storms or exact snowfall totals. What we can say is that the larger weather pattern is pointing in an encouraging direction for a 2026-27 Colorado ski vacation.
Winter Park Could Finish Especially Strong
OpenSnow’s historical analysis also found an interesting monthly pattern near Winter Park during seven previous El Niño episodes:

These percentages show historical patterns, not a month-by-month forecast for 2026-27. Winter storms will still develop on their own schedules, and every El Niño season is different.
The overall history is encouraging, with five of seven significant El Niño seasons reaching above-normal snow-water equivalent by March 31. The monthly data also suggests that conditions may continue building throughout the winter, with March and April offering particularly exciting potential.
That could make 2026-27 a good ski season overall, with an especially strong finish for spring break trips and late-season ski vacations.
March is already a fantastic time to visit the Winter Park area. The days are longer, the temperatures are often more comfortable and the mountains can still deliver serious snow. Add a historical El Niño tendency toward above-normal March accumulation, and spring break starts looking even more appealing.
