When winter ends in the Fraser Valley, something remarkable happens. The skis get stowed. The lift lines disappear. And the trails, miles and miles of them winding through alpine meadows, dense pine forests, and along the banks of the Fraser River, come alive.
Summer in Grand County is not a shoulder season. It is a destination. And if you are spending any time in or around Winter Park this summer, getting on a bike is one of the best decisions you can make.
XSports Ski Broker has been outfitting people for mountain adventure since the shop's original founding in 1983. You probably know us as the go-to ski and snowboard rental shop in Fraser, the place where Winter Park Resort visitors come to get set up with the best gear at all-in pricing. Come summer, we flip to bikes. And our summer rental fleet is ready to take you anywhere you want to go.
This guide covers everything you need to know: what to ride, where to go, how to book, and what makes renting with XSports the smartest call for your summer trip to Winter Park.
Why Summer Cycling in the Fraser Valley Is Worth Planning For
The Fraser Valley sits at around 8,500 feet in elevation. Summers here are genuinely stunning: dry, sunny, warm during the day, cool in the evenings, and surrounded by some of the most rideable terrain in Colorado.
The area serves as the gateway to a trail network stretching across Grand County, connecting Winter Park Resort's lift-served bike trails to lower valley trails, the Fraser River Trail, and the network of roads and paths winding through the mountain communities. Whether you want a mellow family ride along the river or a lung-burning climb to alpine ridges, the terrain is here for it.
Summer cycling near Winter Park draws visitors from Denver, Colorado Springs, and well beyond. The combination of elevation, access, and trail variety makes this one of the Colorado mountain biking destinations that is still surprisingly undiscovered compared to Crested Butte or Moab.
What's in Our Summer Rental Fleet
At XSports, our rental fleet is stocked with the newest, top-of-the-line equipment, the same standard we hold for our ski fleet. No beat-up, poorly maintained bikes that send you backwards on your first climb. Every bike in our fleet is tuned, ready, and matched to the riding you are planning.
Our summer bike rental lineup includes:
Mountain Bikes: Full-suspension and hardtail mountain bikes suited for a range of trails, from beginner-friendly paths to more technical terrain. These are the workhorse option for most summer riders visiting the area.
Fat Bikes: For riders who want extra stability and grip on varied surfaces, our fat tire bikes handle loose gravel, roots, and uneven terrain with ease and are fun for all experience levels.
E-Bikes: Our electric bike options are a game-changer for the Fraser Valley. The elevation here is no joke. Climbs feel significantly harder than they do at sea level. E-bikes level the playing field, letting you cover more ground, tackle steeper routes, and get to the summit without being destroyed. They are also a hit with groups of mixed fitness levels where everyone wants to ride together.
You can start your rental booking directly through our Rent page, where you will find current availability, pricing, and booking options. We believe the price you see should be the price you pay. No hidden fees added at checkout.
Where to Ride: Top Summer Cycling Spots Near Winter Park
1. The Fraser River Trail
This is the entry point for new riders and a reliable favorite for everyone else. The Fraser River Trail is a paved multi-use path running through the heart of the Fraser Valley, connecting key community spots with beautiful river views. It is flat to gently rolling, making it ideal for families with kids, casual riders, and anyone who wants a scenic cruise without technical demands.
Distance: Approximately 3 to 5 miles depending on your route and turnaround point.
Difficulty: Easy.
Best for: Families, beginners, casual cyclists.
2. Tipperary Creek Road and Trail System
Located in the national forest just above Fraser, the Tipperary Creek area offers a progression of terrain from wide dirt roads to narrower singletrack. The lower sections are excellent for intermediate riders building confidence, while the upper reaches offer more elevation gain and satisfying views of the surrounding peaks.
Distance: Highly variable based on how far you push.
Difficulty: Easy to Intermediate.
Best for: Riders looking to mix cruising with some climbing.
3. Crooked Creek Trail
One of the classic routes in the area, Crooked Creek offers a legitimate backcountry experience within relatively easy reach of Fraser. Expect altitude gain, occasional rocky sections, and on a clear day, panoramic views that justify every bit of effort. This route rewards riders who push a little harder.
Distance: 6 to 10 miles out and back, variable.
Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced.
Best for: Experienced riders seeking real mountain terrain.
4. Winter Park Resort Bike Park
When the lifts run in summer, the resort's lift-served bike park opens access to purpose-built trails from beginner to expert at the top of the mountain. This is an entirely different experience from cross-country: more akin to downhill skiing on two wheels, with progression routes for new riders and technical lines for experts.
Distance: Variable by trail.
Difficulty: All levels, with dedicated beginner, intermediate, and expert trails.
Best for: Everyone from first-timers to gravity-focused riders.
5. Vasquez Creek Road
For riders who want a long, gradual climb through quiet forest with a payoff view at the top, Vasquez Creek Road delivers. It is one of the more accessible routes from Fraser and does not require navigating significant technical terrain to reach meaningful elevation.
Distance: 4 to 8 miles depending on turnaround.
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate.
Best for: Riders who want mileage and elevation without technical challenge.
Tips for Summer Riding in the Fraser Valley
Altitude is real. If you are driving up from Denver or anywhere at lower elevation, give yourself time to acclimate before your hardest planned ride. Hydrate more aggressively than you think you need to.
Start earlier than you think. Summer afternoons in the mountains regularly bring thunderstorms, typically arriving between 1:00 and 3:00 PM. Morning rides are safer, cooler, and more scenic. Plan to be off exposed ridges before noon.
Dress in layers. Morning temperatures in Fraser can be in the 40s even in June and July. Even if your midday ride will be warm, a packable rain jacket and lightweight base layer are worth bringing. XSports has a great inventory of packable layers, rain gear, and lightweight riding essentials if you need to grab the right gear before heading out.
Sun protection matters more at altitude. UV exposure increases significantly at elevation. Apply sunscreen, wear sun-protective clothing, and do not skip the sunglasses. You will feel the sun more intensely here than at sea level.
Check conditions before heading to technical terrain. If there has been recent rain, singletrack can be muddy and slippery. It is both safer and better for trail preservation to let trails dry for 24 to 48 hours after significant precipitation.
